Over 100 Pakistan MPs evading income tax

December 23, 2021 09:48 PM

Islamabad, More than 100 members of Pakistan's National Assembly have not paid income tax or are not registered with the Federal Board of Revenue, according to official documents.

The documents have stated that at least 103 MPs have collective assets worth Rs 8 billion, but they don't pay their taxes actively and a few dozen are not even registered as Federal Board of Revenue taxpayers, Geo News report published on Thursday.

It further said, 76 MPs out of 103 are members of major political parties and two even hold a minister's portfolio in the Imran Khan Cabinet.

The records also highlighted that these MPs are in the 'in-active taxpayers' list.

Four MPs, who are not active taxpayers, have purchased properties collectively worth millions of dollars in Dubai, Norway and London in the last decade, Geo News said.

According to the Parliamentary Tax Directory for the fiscal year 2018, only 847 MPs out of 1,170 members of parliament paid a tax of around Rs 1.6 billion.

The directory has the tax credentials of 1,008 MPs and tax columns of 161 MPs have been left blank and some names are even missing.

The government is yet to release MPs’ Tax Directory for the years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021.
