New Delhi, Jan 13 (UNI) External Affairs Minister and his Kenyan counterpart Raychelle Omamo reviewed the progress in bilateral ties during a telephone conversation on Thursday, days after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi paid a visit to Kenya to sign new agreements.

EAM Jaishankar said the two foreign ministers also discussed Commonwealth and regional issues during their talk.

“Good to talk to Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Kenya, Raychelle Omamo.

“Reviewed bilateral progress over the last year. Also discussed Commonwealth and regional issues,” he posted in a tweet.

Jaishankar had met the Kenyan Minister during his three-day visit to the east African country in June last year during which the two had co-chaired the 3rd meeting of the India-Kenya Joint Commission. Both sides had expressed the desire to expand bilateral cooperation under the Kenya-India Joint Commission Framework.

Besides meeting with other Kenyan ministers, Jaishankar had also called on President Uhuru Kenyatta. He had inaugurated the newly renovated Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Graduate Library at the University of Nairobi. The renovation was undertaken through the financial grant support of US$ 1 million by the Indian Government.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa on January 5, from Eritrea. He was received by his counterpart, Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo.

He took part in a series of activities including a visit to the Kipevu Oil Terminus, a Ksh40 billion ($353 million) facility that was erected by the Chinese to aid admittance of larger oil vessels into the Mombasa Port. He met President Uhuru Kenyatta and held discussions with ministers in Kenya.

China is Africa's largest trading partner with direct trade worth over $200 billion (177 billion euros) in 2019, according to official Chinese figures.
