New Delhi Sept Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday slammed the central government over the rising figure of unemployment rate in the country.

“In the name of development, the government has made the country a self–reliant dark city,” he said in a tweet.

Rahul Gandhi also shared a Hindi’s paper story, which said “the unemployment rate has increased from 2.4 percent to 10.3 percent in a year,”.

His remarks came a day after data released by the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) showed that, over 1.9 million people from both the formal and informal sectors lost their jobs in August.

“The unemployment rate in India bounced back in August and touched 8.3% compared to 7% in July, mainly from the farm sector,” CMIE said.

“This has led to a dip in the employment rate from 37.5% in July to 37.2% in August with absolute employment down to 397.8 million compared to 399.7 million in July,” it said.
