New Delhi 5: In a landmark moment for Indian policing, senior IPS officer Sonali Mishra has been appointed as the first-ever woman Director General of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) — an elite security organization responsible for safeguarding the Indian Railways and millions of daily passengers.

A 1993-batch IPS officer from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, Mishra will serve in this prestigious role until October 31, 2026.

The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, marking a proud and inspirational moment not only for the RPF but for the nation as a whole. With an illustrious and decorated service career, Sonali Mishra has held several high-stakes and sensitive assignments.

She was the first woman Inspector General (IG) of the Border Security Force (BSF) to command forces along the India-Pakistan border, and has also led security operations in challenging regions like the Kashmir Valley.

Her leadership in both field operations and intelligence strategy has been widely acknowledged.

She has served as ADG (Additional Director General) and has headed BSF’s intelligence division, showcasing her expertise across tactical, strategic, and operational domains. In recognition of her distinguished service, she has been conferred with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPMDS) and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PMMS).

As she takes over the reins of the RPF, Mishra’s appointment is more than a professional milestone — it is a symbol of India’s evolving commitment to gender inclusivity in leadership.

Her journey inspires millions of young women, especially those aspiring to serve the nation in uniform, proving that leadership is defined not by gender, but by courage, vision, and dedication.
