Income Tax Department Celebrates 77th Republic Day in Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: The 77th Republic Day was celebrated with great patriotic fervour by the Income Tax Department at Aayakar Bhawan, Sector 17-E, Chandigarh, on 26th January 2026. The occasion was graced by Shri Ashok Kumar Saroha, IRS, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, North West Region, Chandigarh, as the Chief Guest, while Shri Jeev Milkha Singh, renowned Indian golfer, Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee, attended as the Guest of Honour.

The celebrations commenced with the unfurling of the National Flag by Shri Ashok Kumar Saroha, IRS. This was followed by a vibrant cultural programme featuring performances by children of departmental officials along with students from Gurukul Global School and Shivalik Public School. Patriotic poems, group dances, and songs paid rich tribute to the sacrifices of soldiers, freedom fighters, and national leaders. Through their performances, the children commemorated the adoption of the Constitution of India, celebrated the nation’s journey as a republic, and highlighted the values of unity, brotherhood, and India’s rich cultural diversity.

In his Republic Day address, Shri Ashok Kumar Saroha, IRS, underscored the pivotal role of the Income Tax Department in nation-building and encouraged officers and officials to continue their committed efforts in tax collection and citizen-centric service delivery. He described the Department as the architect of the nation’s fiscal foundation and highlighted key reforms that have strengthened ethical standards and enhanced service delivery. He further informed that against a budget collection target of approximately ₹1 lakh crore for the North West Region, the Department has already achieved 73% of the target. The Chief Guest also lauded the children’s performances and inspired them to become responsible and exemplary citizens.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Jeev Milkha Singh shared insights from his life journey, emphasizing the crucial role played by his parents in shaping his character and sporting career. On the occasion, the Department felicitated Income Tax employees who have brought laurels to the nation by winning medals and honours at national and international sporting events. Winners of the departmental sports events held from 21st to 23rd January 2026 were also honoured.

A Tricolour-themed photo booth added colour and enthusiasm to the celebrations, drawing active participation from attendees.

The celebrations concluded on a high note, leaving everyone present imbued with a deep sense of patriotism, pride, and commitment to the nation.
