The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi and forecast moderate rainfall on Wednesday, with generally cloudy skies expected to persist over the national capital until August 10 amid active monsoon conditions.
The forecast follows rainfall across several parts of the city on Tuesday, which brought temporary relief from hot and humid weather. According to the IMD, Ayanagar recorded the highest rainfall among Delhi’s weather monitoring stations during the spell.
For Wednesday, the weather office has predicted moderate rain accompanied by a generally cloudy sky. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 33 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to remain near 24 degrees Celsius. Although the showers are expected to keep temperatures in check, humid conditions may continue.
The yellow alert advises residents to remain vigilant as rain and thunderstorms could disrupt normal activities in some parts of the city.
Meanwhile, the IMD on Tuesday issued district-wise nowcast warnings for several states, cautioning against thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall and strong winds over the next two to three hours.
A red warning was issued for Punjab’s Patiala district, where thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds of around 60 kmph and heavy rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour were forecast. The weather department advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during the period of severe weather.
The IMD also issued orange warnings for several districts across Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, indicating a high likelihood of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds of 40-60 kmph, and moderate to heavy rainfall ranging from 5 mm to over 15 mm per hour.
In Punjab, the orange alert covers Fatehgarh Sahib, Ludhiana, Sangrur and Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (SAS Nagar) districts. In Uttar Pradesh, the warning has been issued for Amethi, Ayodhya, Barabanki, Fatehpur, Hardoi, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur Nagar, Lucknow, Pratapgarh, Raebareli and Unnao.
The IMD has urged people in affected areas to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms, exercise caution while travelling, and follow official weather advisories as monsoon activity remains active across northern India.
