Amritsar : On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, BJP leader Akshay Sharma turned his annual Rakhi Mahasammelan into a significant display of political strength in Amritsar North. Thousands of women from the constituency tied Rakhi to Sharma, expressing their affection and support. The massive gathering has also sparked political discussion ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
The Rakhi Mahasammelan was organized at Golden View Resort in Amritsar, where thousands of families from Amritsar North participated. The gathering was not merely a festive celebration, but also highlighted Sharma’s growing political activity in the constituency.
A large number of women along with their family members attended the event organized by Akshay Sharma. The annual programme, held to celebrate the bond between brothers and sisters, witnessed a large turnout that gave it added political significance.
Women presidents of all 204 booth committees formed for Amritsar North also participated in the event. Notably, all these booth committees are headed by women, who have been actively working in support of Akshay Sharma.
An emotional moment was witnessed when around 356 women who had lost their fathers, sons or brothers to drug-related deaths tied Rakhi to Akshay Sharma and accepted him as their brother. It was stated that Sharma has been supporting these families for a long time.
Akshay Sharma said that although these women are residents of Amritsar North, he considers them not merely constituents but members of his own family.
He said several sections of Amritsar North continue to live below the poverty line and that he has been closely observing their circumstances by remaining among the people for a long time. According to Sharma, poverty is not a permanent compulsion but a result of circumstances, and those circumstances can be changed.
Sharma said there is a need for young people to come forward and take responsibility for bringing about this change. He added that the blessings of mothers and sisters can help young leadership move forward and that, together with the people, the constituency’s overall situation can be transformed.
He said his vision is to see a changed Amritsar North after the 2027 Assembly elections, where people are strong rather than helpless.
Sharma further said he wants a constituency where political leaders are seen among the people not only during elections for votes but also after the elections, allowing residents to witness real change on the ground.
He said he has remained continuously active in Amritsar North for a considerable period and has personally experienced the difficulties faced by residents. “I am moving forward not merely with promises, but with the trust of my sisters tied to my wrist in the form of Rakhi,” he said.
Sharma added that if the people give him their support, his endeavour will be to ensure that the people of Amritsar North never have to live a life of helplessness in the future.
