Cong tears into Mamata, accuses her of 'buying ' MLAs

December 02, 2021 11:57 PM

New Delhi, Days after its 12 MLAs from Meghalaya jumped ship to Trinamool Congress, the Congress party on Thursday tore into AITC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of buying 'legislators' like the BJP, and strenthening the "fascist forces".

"Mamata ji is doing the same thing what Modi ji is doing. Modi ji buys MLAs, Mamata ji also buys MLAs. Modi ji breaks the party, Mamata ji also does the same," said Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala here, in an apparent reference to the recent Meghalaya episode, where it's senior leader and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, along with 10 other Legislators, switched over to AITC.

Attacking the West Bengal Chief Minister, Surjewala said, "Mamata ji had switched over to BJP-led NDA many times and had called them their natural ally. She was also part of the Congress-led UPA. For her, it can be a 'political opportunism', but for us, we are fighting the BJP and RSS, which spread division and hatred in the country. She should decide on which side she will be.

"You cannot go to Goa and Uttarakhand, and contest elections where Congress will win. You are going to fight against the Congress, not BJP," he added.

Assembly elections to Goa and Uttarakhand will be held along with three other states in early next year.

Asked about Banerjee's remark that "there is no UPA', Singh said that she had left the UPA in 2012 and should not comment on the same.
