India win 2nd Test match and series by 372 runs against NZ

December 06, 2021 02:51 PM

Mumbai, India won the second Test and the two-match series against New Zealand by a massive margin of 372 runs on day four here at the Wankhede stadium on Monday.

The mammoth victory margin marks India's biggest ever win. The hosts also took the two-match series by 1-0 against the Black Caps.

Off-spinners Jayant Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up four wickets each to wrap up the match in the first hour of the play itself. New Zealand's Henry Nicholls and Rachin Ravindra returned to the middle with an intent to somehow save the visiting side in a one-sided affair.

The India captain Virat Kohli started the day with handing the ball to his off-spinners. Rachin slammed two back-to-back boundaries but on the third delivery Jayant got rid of him. On a perfect length the ball turned to take the outside edge and Rachin was caught at second slip for 18.

Jayant returned to dismiss Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee the space of one ball. While Jamieson got leg-before, Southee's stumps were crashed by the off-spinner.

The 31-year-old Jayant, who last played a Test match for India in 2017, picked up his fourth wicket as William Somerville was caught at short leg. It was Mayank Agarwal who stood low to catch the ball on second attempt.

Nicholls, who was running out of partners, too fell as he was stumped off Ashwin's brilliant delivery for 44, leaving Ajaz Patel stranded on the non-striker's end. And New Zealand eventually folded up for 167.
