China may conduct drills to launch invasion into Taiwan: Defence Ministry

December 14, 2021 10:32 PM

Taipei, Taiwan's Defence Ministry has warned that China is likely to deploy its forces near Taiwan on the pretext of conducting drills and then use them for a genuine invasion.

According to the report submitted to the Taiwanese legislature on Monday, China may deploy forces on the east and south coasts of China on the pretext of staging exercises, NHK World reported.

It further said, China is also likely to send warships to the Western Pacific with aim to encircle Taiwan.

The document also stated that the Chinese military would have trouble landing and supplying troops, as its transport capacity is still limited, NHK World reported.

This comes months after Taiwan's Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng's statement that China will be able to invade Taiwan by 2025.

Taiwan has been governed independently since 1949. While China views the island as its province, Taipei maintains that it is an autonomous country and its sovereignty is recognised by several nations including the US.
