Bilaspur: In a pioneering medical milestone, the Department of Orthopedics at AIIMS Bilaspur has performed its first robotic-assisted total knee replacement surgery, positioning the institute as the first government-run medical facility in Himachal Pradesh to introduce this cutting-edge technology.

The landmark procedure was successfully conducted on an elderly female patient suffering from debilitating arthritis and severe knee deformities. Utilizing advanced robotic precision, the surgical team achieved near-perfect alignment and correction of the deformity, restoring the patient’s mobility with remarkable accuracy and efficiency.

The expert team behind the success included Dr. Ranjeet Choudhary, Dr. Gaurav Kumar Sharma, Dr. Amit Salaria, and Dr. Devender, with anesthesia administered by Dr. Vijayalakshmi Sivapurapu and nursing support led by Bhajan Lal.

Dr. Ranjeet Choudhary emphasized that the integration of robotic technology enhances AIIMS Bilaspur’s capability to deliver world-class orthopedic care in the Himalayan region. Already renowned for complex trauma, spine, and arthroscopic surgeries, the addition of robotic surgery completes the department’s spectrum of advanced services.

The robotic system offers sub-millimeter precision for joint alignment and real-time intraoperative balancing, translating to improved functional outcomes and faster recovery for patients.

This achievement underscores AIIMS Bilaspur’s rising stature as a regional center of excellence in orthopedic care, drastically reducing dependency on out-of-state treatment. Dr. Sharma highlighted the significance of this development for the people of Himachal, stating it will bring transformative healthcare within easier reach of thousands.
